It is known to reach over eight feet in length, and has a long snout full of needle-sharp teeth in two rows.  The gar fish is an opportunistic ambush predator, it tends to float or stand still in the water, then lunge forward snatching its prey. It consumes mostly fish and invertebrates, but also birds and small mammals. Its bite can be severe, if provoked, but it is a mostly harmless fish despite its huge size and fearsome dentition.
